Life story

Lu Xun (183—245), originally given the name Yi and styled Boyan, was a native of Prefecture Wu under Wu County (today’s Suzhou in Jiangsu Province). He was the grandson of Lu Kang’s brother and Sun Ce’s son-in-law. Lu Xun served successively as the official in charge of secretarial work (Dong Xi Cao Ling Shi), senior commandant responsible for cultivation and storage of food by garrison troops in Haichang (Haichang Tun Tian Du Wei) and Colonel of Grand Might (Ding Wei Xiao Wei). In the 24th year of Jian’an period of Eastern Han Dynasty (219), the victory of conquering Jingzhou won him the title Marquis of Huating (Huating Hou). Later, Lu Xun was promoted to General Who Guards the West (Zhen Xi Jiang Jun) and became Marquis of Lou. In the first year of Huang Wu period of the Wu State (222), Lu Xun was appointed as Senior Commander (Da Du Du), the official in charge of local military and diplomatic affairs (Jia Jie). During the Battle of Yiling, he adopted the method of fire attack and defeated troops of Shu. This military success resulted in not only his additional appointments as General Who Assists the State (Fu Guo Jiang Jun) and the governor of Jingzhou (Jiangzhou Mu) but also the change in his noble title to Marquis of Jiangling (Jiangling Hou). In the first year of Huang Long period (229), Lu Xun began to serve as Great General of the Upper Army (Shang Da Jiang Jun) and Right Defender of the Capital (You Du Hu). He also shouldered the responsibility for assisting the crown prince. The 7th year of Chi Wu period (244) saw Lu Xun act for Gu Yong as the prime minister. His posthumous title was Marquis of Zhao (Zhao Hou).
