April 28 has been designated as Suzhou Craftsmen’s Day to be observed annually since 2021, according to a decision adopted on April 25 at the 33rd meeting of the Standing Committee of the 16th Suzhou Municipal People’s Congress.
Suzhou Craftsmen’s Day, the first of its kind in Jiangsu province, not only pays respect to the craftsmen in the name of the city, but also helps promote the spirit of craftsmanship and increase the popularity of the brands of “Made in Suzhou” and “Jiangnan Culture”.
With a history of more than 2,500 years, Suzhou is the cradle of Jiangnan culture. It has been reputed to be a “capital of crafts” with skillful craftsmen coming forth in large numbers. Suzhou-style crafts are outstanding representatives of Jiangnan culture, symbolizing craftsmen’s pursuit of perfection and innovation.
